European Scalable Offshore Renewable Energy Sources

The Horizon 2020 green deal project EU-SCORES, led by the Dutch Marine Energy Centre (DMEC), will demonstrate the combination of offshore wind- with wave- and offshore solar energy. This will pave the way for bankable offshore multi-source energy parks by 2025 across Europe and beyond. These multi-source energy parks will use offshore space more efficiently and balance the electricity grid to achieve a resilient and cost-effective 100% renewable energy system.

SOLAR-WIND

A 2.6 MW grid-connected offshore solar system by Oceans of Energy is going to be installed 2 km off the Belgian coast at the Blue Accelerator test site close to a bottom-fixed Parkwind wind farm. The demonstration will focus on the complementary production profile of offshore solar to wind parks, the electrical integration in existing infrastructure and the survivability of such a large floating structure.

Preparatory Phase (2021-2022)

A front-end engineering design study (FEED) is performed. It assesses (1) the environmental impact, (2) detailed cost analysis and (3) technical design to install a 3 MW offshore solar PV system. During this preparatory study, all permits to build the offshore grid connection and deploy the floaters will be obtained. The preparatory study is planned to be concluded in October 2022.

Deployment & Testing (2022-2024)

After all permits have been obtained, the construction of the offshore solar PV system will be finalized and step-wise deployed. The floaters will be designed and built in the Netherlands. Subsequently, the floaters will be transported to the Port van Oostende in Belgium, where local contractors will be hired to deploy the system early 2023. At the same time, the new export cable and the needed floating electrical infrastructure will be put in place. The deployment is planned to last for approximately two years. It will continuously deliver electricity to the local Belgium grid.

Scale-Up (2024-2025)

In EU-SCORES we work with multiple large-scale project developers, utility companies and grid owners. This collaboration should enable a rapid scale-up after the tests are concluded successfully. More information on the Scale-Up will follow soon.

WAVE-WIND

A 1.2 MW wave energy array consisting of 4 wave energy converters from CorPower Ocean will be deployed and grid connected at the Aguçadoura test site in Portugal. The production profile will be compared to OceanWinds’ offshore floating wind farm WindFloatAtlantic. In addition to the wave array, a floating electrical connection hub will be designed and build by CorPower which enables the interconnection with the offshore wind infrastructure. Next to that, a novel subsea electrical T-connector will be designed, tested, and acquired.

LARGE-SCALE

Technical, Financial & Regulatory De-Risking

To enable large-scale multi-source parks in the near future, all necessary aspects of their implementation are taken into consideration. The technical de-risking investigates the layout, mooring, electrical infrastructure, environmental monitoring, autonomous robotic inspections & lessons learned during two large-scale deployments. The financial de-risking provides business cases, including green hydrogen production, for several regions & learning rate-based cost reductions of wave- & offshore solar energy. The regulatory de-risking evaluates current regulations, provides policy recommendations & engages with relevant stakeholders.
